Bio+Mine Water Team Presents at IWA DIPCON 2023

The Bio+Mine Water Team, represented by Michael Angelo Promentilla, Michelle Airah Pablo, Brian Gerald Bueno, Joshua Pocaan, Christian Jay Balboa, and Johara Capingian, at IWA DIPCON 2023 Conference.

Daegu, South Korea – The Bio+Mine Water Team presented papers at the International Water Association (IWA) 20th International Conference on Diffuse Pollution & Eutrophication (DIPCON 2023) on 6-8 December 2023 at Daegu Exhibition & Convention Center in South Korea. The conference is part of the Korea International Water Week 2023, an annual gathering of stakeholders involved in addressing global water challenges.

The Bio+Mine team presented the design and deployment of limestone leach beds for passive treatment of the acid mine drainage in Sto. Niño, Tublay, Benguet. The limestone leach beds were installed on 31 October – 3 November following the consent of and agreement with the Indigenous Peoples’ leaders and local community. Data presented included the regular monitoring of the water pH, oxidation-reduction potential, temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen.

Joshua Pocaan of the Bio+Mine team opens the “Selection of Passive Treatment Technology for Acid Mine Drainage of Sto. Niño Legacy Copper Mine using Analytical Hierarchy Process – Rating of Alternatives Method.”
Christian Jay Balboa reviews additive and multiplicative models for seasonal data analysis used in his work, “Development of Water Pollution Index for the assessment of domestic water quality: A case study in Sto. Niño legacy mine in Tublay, Benguet, Philippines.”
Brian Gerald Bueno summarizes related literature for his presentation, “Performance of Local Limestone for Passive Treatment of Copper-Rich Acid Mine Drainage from Legacy Mine using Upward Flow Column.”

The engagement of the Bio+Mine team in conferences like IWA DIPCON provides them an opportunity to communicate in a wider academic community their research in developing a site-specific system, underpinned by the local community’s knowledge, skills, and aspirations for the rehabilitation of a legacy mine.
